Breast Implant Removal (Explant Surgery)
Breast implants are a safe and effective way to enhance breast appearance, either for cosmetic purposes or following breast cancer surgery as part of reconstruction.
However, implants can sometimes lead to issues such as capsular contracture, rupture, leak, or conditions such as Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) or Breast Implant Illness (BII). In these cases, removal or revision of the implants may be necessary.
Some women also decide to remove their implants simply because they no longer feel they suit their body or lifestyle. Whatever your reason, Dr Adam Ofri provides a supportive and safe environment to guide you through the process of breast implant removal.
Important Considerations Before Explant Surgery
It’s understandable to have concerns about how your breasts will look after implant removal. Some patients may experience a flatter or ‘deflated’ appearance once the implants are out. In some cases, surgery to reshape or lift the breast (mastopexy) may be considered later.
Dr Ofri’s approach is careful and measured. He typically advises against performing implant removal and breast reshaping in the same operation. This allows time for the tissues to settle naturally, so that the final breast shape can be properly assessed before deciding on any further surgery. Often, patients are pleasantly surprised by their post-surgery appearance and do not require additional procedures.
What Happens During Breast Implant Removal Surgery?
Whenever possible, the surgery is performed through the existing incision to minimise new scarring. The capsule surrounding the implant is usually removed (capsulectomy), which improves breast contour and ensures there are no abnormal tissue changes. If an implant rupture has occurred, this technique also helps prevent silicone leakage into surrounding tissue.
Most patients stay in hospital overnight. Small drains are placed to remove excess fluid and are removed the following day. A supportive bra and dressings are applied for two weeks after surgery. Discomfort is generally minimal and well controlled with simple pain relief.
Recovery After Breast Implant Removal
Most patients recover comfortably within two weeks. Driving and heavy lifting (over 5 kg) should be avoided during this period. You may shower as the dressings are water-resistant, but bathing and swimming should be avoided until your first review appointment. Dr Ofri and his team remain available for support throughout your recovery, and patients can contact them easily through the rooms or patient portal.
Risks & Complications
All surgeries carry some risk. The main potential complications following breast implant removal include bleeding, infection, fluid collection (seroma), or delayed wound healing. Dr Ofri takes great care to minimise these risks through precise surgical technique and gentle tissue handling.
After implant removal, it’s also important to consider cosmetic outcomes. Once swelling has settled, a further discussion can be arranged if you wish to explore options to enhance breast shape or symmetry. Dr Ofri’s goal is to help you feel comfortable, confident, and supported throughout your journey.
